Cervical Cancer in Crete: More Cases in Rural Areas - A Preventable Disease

Friday, 27 March 2026/CretaOne/1

Cervical cancer cases are rising in rural areas of Crete, making it the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths that is preventable. However, early detection through screening can stop the disease before it develops.

The HPV DNA test and the "I Prevent" screening program offer women aged 30-65 the opportunity for early diagnosis, before the human papillomavirus (HPV) leads to cancer. Medical experts emphasize that a positive HPV DNA result does not mean cancer; rather, it indicates a predisposition and the chance to prevent disease progression through appropriate follow-up and treatment.
