Heraklion Airport Hits Capacity Amid Peak Summer Travel Rush

Wednesday, 1 July 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Heraklion's Nikos Kazantzakis Airport is operating at full capacity during the current peak summer season, with departure halls severely overcrowded and long queues reported throughout the terminal. Passenger volumes have reached unusually high levels, creating significant congestion for travelers passing through. Tourists flying in or out of Heraklion should plan for extended wait times at check-in, security, and boarding gates. Arriving at the airport at least three hours before departure is strongly advised. The situation is expected to persist through the peak July-August period. Travelers with early morning or late evening flights may encounter slightly less congestion. Those with flexible itineraries should consider checking flight status before heading to the airport. Kastelli, Crete's new international airport, is under development and projected to open around 2028, which will eventually relieve pressure on Nikos Kazantzakis.
