Back to newsThe Morosini Fountain in central Heraklion, widely known as "Ta Liontaria" (The Lions), is once again freely accessible to visitors. The protective fencing that had been erected around the 17th-century Venetian landmark was removed following pushback from local businesses and civic groups. Planned restoration and maintenance works on the fountain have been postponed until after the summer season to avoid disrupting tourism in one of the city's most visited public spaces. The fountain sits at the heart of Lions Square (Plateia Liondarion), a popular meeting point in the old town surrounded by cafes and shops. Tourists visiting Heraklion this summer can enjoy unobstructed views and access to the fountain as usual. Restoration works are expected to begin in the autumn once the high season concludes.
