Crete's Remote Gems Featured in European Sustainable Tourism Project

Thursday, 25 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The Region of Crete participated in a Mediterranean Sustainable Tourism Conference, where two of eastern Crete's most ecologically significant destinations took center stage. Kato Zakros, a remote Minoan archaeological site and protected gorge on the far eastern coast, and Koufonisi, an uninhabited island off the southern shore known for its ancient Roman ruins and crystal-clear waters, are both featured in an ongoing European-funded project focused on responsible tourism development. For visitors, this signals growing institutional commitment to preserving these lesser-visited gems while keeping them accessible. Kato Zakros is reachable by car from Sitia and rewards travelers with a palace excavation site and a scenic gorge walk down to the beach. Koufonisi is accessible by boat from Ierapetra. Both sites are best visited in shoulder season to minimize impact and enjoy a quieter experience.
