Samaria Gorge Closures Threaten Livelihoods in Western Crete

Sunday, 14 June 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
Business owners and residents in the Omalos plateau area of western Crete are protesting against repeated closures of the Samaria Gorge, one of the island's most popular hiking destinations. The gorge, which runs 16 kilometers through the White Mountains National Park, has faced multiple suspension decisions that local shopkeepers say are harming their livelihoods. Closures are typically ordered due to high fire risk, extreme heat, or safety concerns. Tourists planning to hike the gorge, which connects Omalos to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, should check the current operational status before making the trip, as access can be suspended with little notice. The trail is generally open from May to October, weather and conditions permitting. Updates are available through the Chania Forest Service or local travel agencies.
