Crete Dam Project Gets 12-Month Extension for Engineering Studies

Saturday, 25 April 2026/Haniotika Nea/1
The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure has approved a 12-month extension for completing engineering studies on the planned double dam project along the Sembronitsi and Derianos rivers in the Chania region of western Crete. The project, which aims to improve water management and storage capacity for the area, has been delayed further as technical studies remain unfinished. This is the latest in a series of postponements affecting the infrastructure scheme. For visitors, the delay has no immediate practical impact on travel or access to the Chania region. However, the ongoing study phase means construction work is not expected to begin in the near term, so the landscape and road access around the affected river valleys in western Crete should remain unchanged for the foreseeable future.
