Greece Pays Bounty to Stop Toxic Pufferfish Invading Mediterranean

Sunday, 28 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The Greek government has introduced a financial incentive program offering fishermen 5.33 euros per kilogram for pufferfish caught in Greek waters, including around Crete. The initiative aims to reduce the population of the invasive silver-cheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus), which has spread across the Eastern Mediterranean. This species is highly toxic and poses a real risk to anyone who handles or consumes it. Tourists swimming or snorkeling around Crete should be aware that pufferfish may be present in coastal waters. Do not touch or pick up any unfamiliar fish. If you see one on a beach or caught on a fishing line, keep your distance. The fish is not served in restaurants, but it is important to avoid purchasing any unlabeled or informally caught seafood from unknown sources.
