Greece to Roll Out Free-Flow Tolling on Major Highways

Thursday, 18 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Greece is exploring the introduction of free-flow tolling on its major highways, a system that eliminates traditional toll booths in favor of overhead cameras that automatically read license plates as vehicles pass at normal speed. Under this model, drivers receive bills electronically rather than stopping to pay. For tourists renting cars in Greece, including on Crete, this change would mean no more queuing at toll plazas, but it also requires ensuring your rental agreement includes provisions for handling toll charges, as fees may be billed to the rental company and passed on to you afterward. Travelers should ask their car rental provider about toll billing policies before departure. No implementation date has been announced yet, and the proposal remains under government review.
