Child transferred amid Crete hospital staffing shortages

Sunday, 31 May 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
An 11-year-old child suffered a serious injury in the Agios Nikolaos area of eastern Crete and had to be transferred to Heraklion University Hospital for treatment. The transfer was necessary because the local hospital in Agios Nikolaos lacked an on-call radiologist at the time of the incident. The case highlights ongoing staffing shortages in regional hospitals across Crete. Tourists visiting the eastern part of the island, including popular areas around Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, should be aware that for serious medical emergencies, treatment may require transfer to Heraklion, approximately 70 kilometers west. Travel insurance covering emergency medical transport is strongly recommended for all visitors to the island.
