Princess Anne visited Maleme, a village in western Crete near Chania, to attend a commemoration ceremony honoring British and Commonwealth soldiers who died during the Battle of Crete in May 1941. The ceremony took place at the Maleme War Cemetery, where over 1,500 Allied servicemen are buried. Her Royal Highness led prayers and paid tribute to the fallen during the 85th anniversary of the battle. The Maleme War Cemetery is open to visitors year-round and is located approximately 16 kilometers west of Chania, easily reached by car or local bus. It is one of several WWII memorial sites in Crete, alongside the German War Cemetery also in Maleme. Visitors interested in the Battle of Crete can also explore the nearby War Museum in Chania for additional historical context.
