The municipality of Hersonissos has officially launched preparations to host the 51st United Nations Inter-Agency Games in 2026. Representatives from the UN met with local officials at the Hersonissos Town Hall to begin coordinating the event, marking the formal start of the countdown to the games.
The UN Inter-Agency Games bring together staff from various UN organizations to compete in sporting events, and hosting them in Crete represents a significant international occasion for the region. Hersonissos, located on the northern coast of Crete roughly 25 kilometers east of Heraklion, is one of the island's most developed tourism areas.
Tourists visiting Hersonissos around the time of the 2026 games should expect increased activity and accommodation demand in the area. Booking accommodations well in advance is advisable, as the event will draw international visitors alongside the regular summer tourist season.
