Back to newsCrete has recorded a 37% reduction in road fatalities, one of the largest decreases in Europe, according to announcements made at the Economist Conference in Chania. The improvement follows a series of targeted road safety measures, including stricter police enforcement, mandatory breathalyzer testing, and the installation of AI-powered traffic cameras across the island. Minister Kyranakis stated that further reductions are expected throughout 2026.
For tourists driving in Crete, these measures are actively in effect. Expect frequent police checkpoints, especially on major roads and during evening hours. Drink-driving laws are strictly enforced. Speed cameras and AI monitoring are operational on key routes. Renting a car remains one of the most practical ways to explore the island, and conditions are improving. Drive cautiously on mountain roads, wear seatbelts at all times, and never drink and drive.
