Back to newsThe Minoan Palace Centers of Crete have been officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, marking a historic milestone for the island. Heraklion Mayor Alexis Kalokerinos attended the inscription ceremonies and described the moment as deeply moving. The designation recognizes the outstanding universal value of Minoan archaeological sites, which include the Palace of Knossos near Heraklion, as well as palaces at Phaistos, Malia, and Zakros. For visitors, UNESCO status reinforces these sites as must-see destinations and may bring increased investment in preservation and visitor infrastructure. Knossos, located about 5 km south of Heraklion city center, is the largest and most accessible of the palatial complexes and is open to visitors year-round. Check the official site for opening hours and ticket prices before visiting.
