Back to newsCelebrations marking the inscription of Crete's Minoan Palace Centers on the UNESCO World Heritage List kicked off at the Minoan Palace Center of Malia, located on the north coast of Crete approximately 34 kilometers east of Heraklion. The site joins Knossos, Phaistos, and Zakros as part of a collective UNESCO recognition honoring Minoan civilization, one of Europe's earliest and most influential Bronze Age cultures dating back over 3,500 years.
For visitors, this UNESCO status adds international significance to a site already worth visiting for its sprawling Bronze Age ruins, royal quarters, and ceremonial spaces. Malia Palace is open to the public and easily accessible by car or bus from Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos. Entry fees apply. The site is best visited in the morning to avoid midday heat, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended for the uneven terrain.
