Yellow Foxglove: Beautiful but Deadly Plant Found in Crete

The yellow foxglove (Digitalis lutea) is a wild plant found in Crete and classified within the Scrophulariaceae family. Known locally as Daktylitis, it grows in rocky habitats and scrubland across the island. While visually striking with its pale yellow tubular flowers, this plant is toxic and should not be touched or consumed. Digitalis plants contain compounds historically used in medicine but dangerous without proper preparation. Hikers and nature lovers exploring Cretan trails, particularly in inland and mountainous areas, may encounter this species during spring and early summer. Visitors are advised to observe wildflowers without picking or handling them, both for personal safety and to protect the local ecosystem. Collecting wild plants in protected natural areas of Crete may also be subject to local regulations.
