Back to newsGreece's Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Christos Dimas, announced from Chania that the first sections of BOAK, the major east-west highway crossing Crete, will open to traffic before the end of 2025. The highway is designed to significantly reduce travel times between the island's main cities and regions, making it easier to reach destinations across Crete by car.
The minister also confirmed that the new international airport at Kastelli, located southeast of Heraklion, is on track to open in November 2028. The airport will replace Heraklion's Nikos Kazantzakis airport and is designed to handle up to 18 million passengers per year. For visitors, this means improved road connectivity across the island in the near term, and a modern, higher-capacity gateway to Crete from late 2028 onward.
