Greece's Smart Traffic Cameras Begin Issuing Automatic Fines

Monday, 1 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Since late March 2026, the Greek Police (ELAS) have been running a pilot program using smart speed and traffic cameras across Greece, including Crete, under Law 5256/2025. The system automatically detects and issues digital fines for road traffic violations such as speeding, running red lights, and illegal overtaking. Violations are recorded electronically and notices are sent directly to vehicle owners. For tourists renting cars in Crete, this means traffic fines can now be issued automatically without a police officer being present. Rental car companies are legally required to disclose the renter's details, so fines can follow you home. Drive within posted speed limits, obey traffic signals, and be aware that cameras are active on main roads and highways. Fines must be paid within a set deadline to avoid penalties doubling.
