Crete's Smart Traffic Cameras Issue 2,400+ Fines in Pilot Program

Saturday, 30 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Since late March 2026, Crete has been running a pilot program using smart traffic cameras that automatically issue digital fines for road violations. The system has already generated more than 2,400 citations, with objections accepted in only 2.11% of cases, suggesting the cameras are operating with high accuracy. Tourists renting cars or driving on the island should be aware that violations such as speeding, running red lights, or other traffic offenses are now captured automatically and processed digitally. Fines can be issued without a police officer being present. Rental car drivers may receive notices through their rental company after returning home. Driving carefully and following posted speed limits and traffic signals is strongly advised. The program is currently in a pilot phase, but enforcement is active and citations are being upheld.
