Greek Officials Warn Crete Risks Becoming Migrant Hub

Friday, 12 June 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Greek regional officials have raised concerns about increasing migrant arrivals to Crete via sea routes from Libya, describing the island's maritime borders as under growing pressure. Local politicians Papanikolaou and Xylouri issued warnings that Crete risks becoming a long-term reception hub if national and European authorities do not take more decisive action to manage migration flows. They cautioned against what they called a loss of operational control and called for immediate policy responses. For visitors to Crete, there is no direct impact on tourism, travel, or daily life on the island. Ports, airports, resorts, and public spaces operate normally. The issue is primarily one of administrative and infrastructure management being debated at a political level, with no safety concerns for tourists currently reported by local or national authorities.
