Saharan Dust Sweeps Crete as Authorities Issue Health Alert

Saturday, 9 May 2026/CretaOne/1
Crete's Public Health Directorate and the Regional Environment and Spatial Planning Authority have issued guidance as concentrations of Saharan dust are expected to rise across the island. The phenomenon is forecast to peak in the coming days, with air quality noticeably reduced in several areas. Authorities recommend that people with respiratory conditions, asthma, or cardiovascular issues limit time outdoors and keep windows closed during peak hours. Tourists are advised to carry any prescribed medication and to avoid strenuous outdoor activity such as hiking during the worst of the episode. Fine dust particles can irritate eyes and airways even in otherwise healthy individuals. Visibility may also be reduced. Conditions are expected to gradually improve once the weather pattern shifts. Locals and visitors should monitor regional health authority updates for real-time air quality information.
