Agios Nikolaos, the capital of Lasithi Prefecture in eastern Crete, is widely regarded as one of the most scenic towns on the island. The town is built around a small saltwater lake connected to the sea by a narrow channel, creating a picturesque setting that draws visitors from around the world. The lakeside promenade is lined with cafes and restaurants, making it a pleasant spot to spend an afternoon. The town also offers easy access to several beaches, including Kitroplatia and Ammoudi, both within walking distance of the center. Agios Nikolaos serves as a practical base for exploring eastern Crete, with ferry connections to nearby islands including Spinalonga, home to a historic former leper colony. The town is approximately 65 kilometers east of Heraklion and is reachable by KTEL bus or rental car.
