Eta Aquariids meteor shower peaks tonight with up to 50 meteors per hour

Tuesday, 5 May 2026/CretaOne/1
The Eta Aquariids meteor shower peaks tonight, produced by debris from Halley's Comet. This annual event is visible across Crete and offers a strong show for early risers, as the best viewing window falls in the hours before dawn. Rates can reach 50 or more meteors per hour under clear skies. To get the most from the display, move away from city lights in Heraklion, Chania, or Rethymno and head to darker inland or coastal areas. The southern and eastern parts of the island, including the Lasithi Plateau, offer particularly low light pollution. No equipment is needed, just a reclining position and 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark. Check local forecasts beforehand, as cloud cover will affect visibility.
