Crete Traffic Crackdown Nets 2,000+ Violations in Major Police Operation

Monday, 4 May 2026/Cretan Magazine/1
Greek traffic police conducted a large-scale enforcement operation across Crete over the span of a few days, checking 5,962 vehicles in total. More than 2,000 violations were recorded during the checks, indicating a significant rate of non-compliance among drivers on the island's roads. Tourists renting cars or scooters in Crete should be aware that enforcement operations are active and frequent, particularly at the start of the tourist season. Common violations typically include speeding, seatbelt non-use, mobile phone use while driving, and failure to carry valid documents. Fines can be substantial and may affect your rental deposit. Always carry your driving licence, rental agreement, and passport when driving, obey posted speed limits, and ensure all passengers are buckled. Road safety checks can occur anywhere on the island, including on main highways and rural roads.
