Princess Anne Honors RAF Fallen at Crete's Maleme Memorial

Saturday, 23 May 2026/SourceCretan Magazine/1 min read
Princess Anne of the United Kingdom visited the RAF Memorial at Maleme, near Chania, as part of an official visit to the region. The memorial honours the fallen of the 30th and 33rd Squadrons of the Royal Air Force, who died during the Battle of Crete in May 1941. Located in the village of Maleme on the northwest coast of Crete, the site is a significant point of historical interest for visitors, particularly those with connections to Commonwealth wartime history. The nearby Maleme War Cemetery, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, is open to the public year-round and free to visit. If you are travelling along the northern coastal road between Chania and Kissamos, the memorial and cemetery make a worthwhile and sobering stop, offering a direct connection to one of the most consequential battles fought on Greek soil.
