Back to newsDirect flights between Alexandroupoli (northeastern Greece) and Heraklion, Crete's main city, have resumed, restoring a regional air link that improves connectivity across the country. Travelers from Thrace and the Aegean region can now fly directly to Crete without routing through Athens, reducing travel time significantly.
Looking ahead, a direct air connection between Mytilini (Lesbos) and Heraklion is planned to launch in 2027, further expanding Crete's domestic flight network.
For tourists, these routes offer more flexible entry points into Crete, particularly for visitors combining island-hopping with a mainland Greece itinerary. Heraklion airport serves as the gateway to central and eastern Crete, with easy access to Knossos, the Lassithi plateau, and major resort areas along the north coast.
