Dangerous Heat Wave Sweeps Crete, Officials Warn Tourists

lundi 8 juin 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min de lecture
Crete recorded some of the highest temperatures in Greece on Monday, June 8, as a wave of oppressive, windless heat settled across the island. Inland areas and low-lying plains were most affected, with the mercury climbing significantly above seasonal averages. This type of still, humid heat, known locally as "koufovrassi," can feel more intense than dry heat and poses real risks for visitors spending time outdoors. Tourists are advised to avoid strenuous activity between 11:00 and 17:00, stay hydrated, seek shade or air-conditioned spaces during peak hours, and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles. Those planning hikes, archaeological site visits, or beach days should start early in the morning. Conditions are expected to remain similar in the coming days, so checking the local forecast each morning is recommended.
