Local resident Vasilis Psyllakis recalls that potatoes and wheat were traditionally grown across the plateau for generations. He describes a now-rare local variety known as the "omalitiki" potato, once prized for its slow six-month growing cycle, compared to the three-month varieties cultivated today. The plateau is best known to visitors as the starting point of the Samaria Gorge hike, one of Europe's longest gorges. Beyond hiking, the area offers a glimpse into traditional Cretan mountain farming life. The Omalos Plateau is accessible by road from Chania, approximately 37 kilometers south, and is typically open to visitors from spring through autumn.
