To the south of the prefecture of Rethymnon rises the massif of Kedros , which in winter turns into a unique "park" of waterfalls! Limestone rocks expel the underground water coming from snow and rain and form dozens of springs around the mountain.

In many places around Kedros , the streams that are formed meet rifts and form high waterfalls. The highest of the falls of Kedros is formed at the highest point of the wild and imposing canyon of Gre Dafni , above the village Krya Vrysi in the province of Agios Vasilios .

Rechtas or Rechtara , as locals call it, usually has water until spring, which comes from melted snow. The falling height reaches 100 meters and therefore it is ranked as one of the highest waterfalls in Greece.

The high waterfall is accessed by the dirt road that heads to the mountain shelter of Kedros , about 5km long, starting from Krya Vrisi, which is quite passable for any car, although it looks very scary from afar. The road ascends the steep slopes of the mountain and has incredible views of the bay of Messara and the valley of Akoumianos River formed between the mountains of Asiderotas and Vouvala .

Below the waterfall, the impressive Gre Dafni canyon is formed, with several smaller waterfalls. The same ravine hosts the climbing field of Krya Vrisi , one of the most famous in Crete.

The field can be reached through the same dirt road that goes up to Rechtas Falls. The stream of the gorge passes through the village of Krya Vryssi and then empties on Triopetra Beach via the river Akoumianos .
