The Venetian mansions at Venerato

The picturesque Venerato village, located 20km from Heraklion , was in the 16th-century the resort of the Venetian lords. It was so pleasant for them stay here, that they compared the village to Venice .

Here were built, as expected, several mansions for the Venetian nobles who lived in Venerato . Today, several of these buildings are still surviving.

It is believed that these chateaus were occasionally used as defensive towers.
