Trail Agios Ioannis - Drakolaki Cave

From Agios Ioannis , province Sfakia , starts the amazing path that reaches Krousia plateau at an altitude of 1200m., below the imposing peak of Zaranokefala . From Krousia start two paths, one towards Zaranokefala and the second to cave Drakolakki , which is presented here.

We start our course from Agios Ioannis and follow the intense uphill path to Krousia for one hour, climbing the craggy ravine of Porolago . Alternatively we can drive in the dirt road that ends at the entrance of the plateau Krousia.

At Krousia we see the mitato (primitive stone built hut) of family Georgedakis . In the middle of the small plateau there are large stone wells with water that never dries up and was used to water the numerous herds of the region.

From Krousia starts the incredibly beautiful forest trail that reaches the underground cave-river Drakolakki . The whole area is covered by thick woods of pine, cypress and oak trees.

Apart from the natural beauty of the wooded landscape, thid place has a good reputation for its climate as the most healthy in Crete.
