Tavri Plateau

The plateau Tavri is located at the White Mountains , 2km west of Askifou Plateau , 51km south of Chania , at an altitude of around 1200m. It can be accessed via a road starting from Ammoudari settlement in Askifou , crossing Tavri and then ending up in Niatos plateau .

There is also a serpentine hiking trail ascending from Ammoudari crossing a great cypress wood. Tavri hosts a big mountain shelter with 42 beds, where anyone can stay overnight after having contacted the Mountaineering Club of Chania .

The beauty is indescribable, as the views to the peak Kastro (2215m) of the White Mountains causes awe. Tavri is the starting point for several parts; the most common are the trail to the top of Kastro , the trail to Sfakiano Gorge and the part of the E4 European path crossing the mountain desert from Katsiveli to Askifou .

Tavri plateau is often dressed in white in winter and it is said that it was here that someone first skied in Crete in 1955. Moreover, there is the chapel of the Holy Spirit (Timios Stavros) , built with stone and fitting in perfect harmony with the landscape.
