The monastery of Panagia Perampeliotissa dedicated to the Nativity of Virgin Mary (Genesion) , is located north of the village Kourounes and south of Nofalias , quite close to Neapolis . Built in the Venetian Era, the monastery still stands deserted in the middle of the small village Perambela , which was developed around the monastery in the late 19th century.
During the Great Revolution of 1866 , many residents from the surrounding villages found shelter here. Today, the church and only a few buildings of the monastic complex still survive.
The monastery is still famous for the icon of Panagia Perampeliotissa ( Virgin Mary from Perambela ), which is considered miraculous and attracts pilgrims from all over Crete on September 8.
