The village Charakas in the province Monofatsi took its name after a large rock ( charakas in the Cretan dialect) on which we still see the ruins of the small Venetian fortress Charakas. The fort hosts the church of the Transfiguration of Lord Christ (Metamorfosis) , which was restored recently and is celebrated annually on August 6th.

The fort consists of three rooms in which the floor is carved into the rock and covered with plaster. There is a short paved trail of the fortress, starting from a spacious parking space.
