Island Overview
October opens with a clear split across Crete. Active thunderstorms are tracking along the north coast and central spine, dropping significant rainfall from Chania to Hersonissos, while the south coast sits under grey skies but remains largely dry.
North Coast and Central Crete
Rethymno is taking the heaviest hit today with 91 mm of rainfall forecast, enough to cause localised flooding in low-lying areas. Chania follows with 58 mm, Hersonissos and Malia are both around 43 mm, and Heraklion sits at 32 mm. Temperatures across the north range from 18 to 20°C. Wind gusts reach 25 km/h at Rethymno. UV is minimal, peaking at UV 2 or below across most northern cities.
East Crete
Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda are seeing only light rain, under 2 mm. Temperatures reach 21.8°C, the warmest in the northern half of the island. Sitia has a thunderstorm but accumulations of only 9.6 mm. Wind gusts reach 26 to 27 km/h in the east, among the strongest readings on the island today.
South Coast
Ierapetra and Makrigialos offer the most favourable conditions on the island today. Both are overcast but recording virtually no rain, with Ierapetra at 0 mm and Makrigialos at 0.1 mm. Temperatures hit 22°C in Ierapetra, the highest point on the island today. Wind gusts reach 32 km/h, the strongest reading island-wide, but sheltered geography keeps seas exceptionally calm, with waves below 0.5 m at both locations.
Mountains
The White Mountains and Mount Ida are receiving heavy rainfall consistent with north coast totals. Hikers should avoid exposed routes today. Visibility will be poor and trail surfaces slippery.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures are 24 to 25°C across the island. Wave heights on the north coast are significant: Chania 2.76 m, Rethymno 1.96 m, Heraklion 1.8 m, Hersonissos 1.64 m. The south is calm: Ierapetra 0.26 m and Makrigialos 0.42 m. UV peaks at UV 4 only in Ierapetra and is very low everywhere else, so sun protection is not a concern for most of the island today.
Swim Verdict
North and central coast swimming is not advisable today. Waves above 1.5 m, active thunderstorms, and strong currents make conditions unsafe from Chania to Hersonissos. The south coast, particularly Ierapetra and Makrigialos, offers calm, warm water with no active rainfall and is the only reasonable swimming option on the island today.
Practical Tip for the Day
If you are based in the north or centre, a drive south is worth considering. The journey from Heraklion to Ierapetra takes around 1 hour 15 minutes via the E75. For those who cannot travel, museums and indoor archaeological sites across the island offer solid alternatives on a heavy rain day.
