Island Overview

A weather system pushing in from the west is delivering rain and low cloud to Chania and Rethymno, while central and eastern areas hold drier conditions under general overcast. Temperatures remain comfortably warm island-wide, from 25°C in Chania to 28°C at Makrigialos on the south coast.
North Coast vs South Coast
The contrast today is pronounced. On the north coast, Chania is the wettest point with 6.9mm of rain and a UV index of just 1.45. Rethymno picks up 2.2mm with intermittent light rain. Heraklion starts under morning fog but stays mostly dry; Hersonissos and Malia remain overcast and rain-free throughout. The south and southeast coast tell a different story. Ierapetra, Makrigialos, and Sitia are dry all day, with highs of 27 to 28°C. Makrigialos records the warmest reading on the island at 28.2°C, with a night minimum that holds above 22°C.
Mountain Conditions
With moisture advancing from the northwest, the White Mountains above Chania and the upper slopes of Psiloritis will carry cloud and some rain through the morning. Visibility on high mountain roads may be reduced, particularly on the western approaches. Anyone planning to hike the Samaria Gorge or other western mountain routes should bring a light waterproof layer and check local conditions before setting out.
Sea, Wind, and UV
Sea temperatures hold between 26.0°C and 26.8°C across all monitored bays, firmly in late-summer range. Waves are exceptionally calm: 0.72m at most off Chania, below 0.5m on every other coastline. Wind stays light all day, peaking at 13 to 14 km/h along the east coast. UV is moderate across the centre and east, reaching 6.05 at Ierapetra and 6.25 at Makrigialos. In the rain-affected west, cloud suppresses UV sharply; Chania records an index of just 1.45 today, so sun protection is largely a non-issue there.
Swim Verdict
Swimming conditions are good to excellent across the island. Sea temperatures of 26 to 27°C and near-flat water make for comfortable swimming on any coastline. Even under cloud and light rain in Chania and Rethymno, the sea is warm and the surface is calm. The eastern and southeastern beaches, particularly at Ierapetra, Makrigialos, and around Elounda Bay, combine dry conditions with calm, warm water and offer the best overall beach experience today.
Practical Tip
If dry weather is the priority, plan your day around the east coast. Ierapetra and Makrigialos see no rain, warm temperatures, and near-flat seas. The Lassithi coast around Elounda and Ag. Nikolaos has only isolated brief showers with minimal accumulation. Travellers based in Chania or Rethymno should carry a light waterproof for morning outings. The rain in the west is not heavy and conditions there should ease through the afternoon.
