Island Overview
Crete is running hot and dry today. Temperatures peak between 30 and 33°C from Chania to Ierapetra, skies are clear across most of the island, and no rainfall is recorded or expected anywhere. Rethymno sees a few high clouds passing through, but they bring no change to beach conditions. On paper this is a textbook late-August day; the wind map, however, tells a more divided story.
North and South: A Divided Day
The north coast is calm and accessible. Chania tops the island at 33.3°C with a light sea breeze of 16 km/h. The resort strip from Hersonissos to Malia sees similarly gentle conditions, and Heraklion sits at 32°C with a moderate 22 km/h northerly. Seas here are relaxed, waves staying well below one metre. This is comfortable beach weather for all ages.
The south coast is a different picture. Ierapetra is recording gusts to 67 km/h and Makrigialos is not far behind at 65 km/h. The meltemi is funnelling hard along the south-facing coast. Air temperature reaches 32°C but open beaches are rough and swimming is hazardous. Anyone based here should factor this in before heading to the shore.
Eastern Crete
Agios Nikolaos and Elounda share a 33.1°C high but face gusts to 38.5 km/h. Sitia sees 32.5 km/h with the island's highest waves at 1.38 metres. Conditions are manageable for experienced swimmers in sheltered spots, but the open water is choppy and uninviting for casual beach use.
The Interior
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis range above Rethymno will be 8 to 12 degrees cooler than the coast. Gorge paths are dry and in good condition. Start any inland or mountain hike before 09:00 to stay ahead of the heat building in the valleys from mid-morning onward.
Sea Temperature and UV
Sea temperatures range from 26.4°C at Makrigialos to 27.7°C along the north coast. UV peaks at 7.8 in Rethymno and holds above 7.5 everywhere on the island. That is the high band. Apply SPF 30 or above, reapply every two hours, and plan shade breaks between 11:00 and 15:00.
Swim Verdict
The north coast from Kissamos to Heraklion is the clear recommendation today. Water temperature averages 27.5°C, waves stay under one metre, and winds are light. The south coast is not suitable for swimming. Eastern bays can work for confident swimmers in sheltered coves; check the local flag on arrival and watch for sudden gusts.
Practical Tip
Wind and heat together accelerate dehydration faster than most visitors expect. Carry at least one litre per person if spending the day outdoors, and top up at every opportunity. South-coast visitors looking for calmer water can try the bay at Mirtos, west of Ierapetra, which tends to stay sheltered during strong meltemi episodes on the open south coast.
