Island Overview
July 26 delivers a dry, settled day across Crete from Chania to Sitia. No rainfall is recorded or expected anywhere on the island. Temperatures peak between 26.8°C in Sitia and 29.4°C in Elounda, with skies ranging from fully clear in the east to partly cloudy along the north coast. The main variable today is wind: the meltemi, the Aegean's prevailing summer north wind, accelerates as it funnels around the eastern headlands and spills onto the south coast with considerable force.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast from Chania through Heraklion to Hersonissos sees partly cloudy or mainly clear conditions, peak temperatures of 27 to 29°C, and meltemi gusts of 16 to 23 km/h. Overnight lows are comfortable, between 22 and 24°C. The south coast is a different proposition on the wind front: Ierapetra records gusts to 42 km/h and Makrigialos to 44 km/h, making these the windiest locations on the island today. Despite the strong wind, the Libyan Sea facing shores remain remarkably calm in terms of swell, with wave heights of just 0.4 to 0.6 m. The wind direction does not favour large wave build-up on these south-facing beaches. Ierapetra also holds the island's highest overnight minimum at 24.3°C, a reliable feature of this coast throughout July and August.
Mountains
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif inland from Rethymno offer a cooler alternative to the coast. Expect temperatures 8 to 12°C below coastal readings, clear visibility, and no precipitation at any altitude. Gorge walks and upland trails are best started before 09:00 to avoid accumulated heat in enclosed valleys during the middle of the day.
Sea Conditions, Wind and UV
Sea surface temperatures are warm across the board, ranging from 25.5°C at Makrigialos to 27°C at Heraklion and Rethymno. Wave heights are moderate on the north and east coasts, reaching 1.76 m at Sitia and 1.6 to 1.68 m at Hersonissos and Malia. These produce an active shore break but remain within normal summer limits for adult swimmers. UV peaks at 8.45 in Rethymno and sits above 8.1 everywhere on the island, placing all locations firmly in the very high category. Full sun protection is not optional at these levels.
Swim Verdict
The calmest water today is on the south coast around Ierapetra and Makrigialos, where low swell more than compensates for the wind. North coast beaches from Chania to Heraklion offer comfortable conditions with manageable waves of 1.1 to 1.4 m. The east coast at Sitia and the open beaches at Hersonissos and Malia have the liveliest surf, up to 1.76 m. Confident adult swimmers will find these beaches fine; families with young children should look for a sheltered cove or head to the south coast today. Sea temperature is excellent everywhere, between 25.5 and 27°C.
Practical Tip for the Day
UV intensity peaks between 11:00 and 15:00. Apply SPF 50 sunscreen before leaving accommodation and reapply after every swim. The strong south coast wind creates a false impression of coolness that accelerates sunburn without reducing the UV load. Carry more water than you think you need: a 10-minute walk to a beach under a UV index above 8 depletes hydration faster than most visitors expect.
