Island Overview

Friday 26 June brings a dry day across Crete, with skies ranging from fully clear in the south and east to partly cloudy along the north coast. No rainfall is expected anywhere on the island. Temperatures peak between 28°C in the west and 32°C in the far east, while overnight lows stay above 22°C at most coastal locations, keeping evenings warm and comfortable.

North Coast vs South Coast

The north coast sees varied conditions. Chania and Rethymno are partly cloudy, with highs of 29.6°C and 28.5°C and light to moderate winds of 15 to 21 km/h, well-suited to sightseeing or a morning at the beach. Heraklion is mainly clear at 30.4°C with a stronger northerly gusting to 25 km/h. The resort strip from Hersonissos to Malia shares similar temperatures around 29°C and winds near 23 km/h.

The south coast is calmer and warmer. Ierapetra reaches 30.2°C under clear skies, with the island's warmest overnight low at 26°C and very light winds of 14 km/h. Makrigialos is clear and almost still at 30.7°C, with waves barely reaching half a metre.

The far east is the hottest and windiest zone today. Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda both reach 32°C, with gusts hitting 33 km/h that create noticeable surface chop. Sitia is a few degrees cooler at 28°C but also breezy at 26 km/h.

Mountain Conditions

The White Mountains above Chania and Mount Ida above Rethymno will run 10 to 14°C cooler than coastal peaks. Walkers taking on long gorge routes such as Samaria should start early and aim to finish the descent well before midday to avoid the strongest heat and UV exposure.

Sea State, Wind and UV

Sea temperatures are solidly in summer range: 25.8°C at Rethymno, 25.5°C at Chania, and 25°C at both Heraklion and Ierapetra. The east coast runs slightly cooler at 23.6 to 24.7°C. Wave heights are modest across the board, from 0.5m at Ierapetra and Makrigialos to under 1m on the north and east coasts.

UV peaks at 8.65 in Rethymno, placing the whole island firmly in the Very High category. Unprotected skin can burn in under 20 minutes during the 11:00 to 16:00 window.

Swim Verdict

Swimming conditions are good to excellent across most of Crete today. The south coast offers the flattest water and warmest air temperatures. North coast beaches are calm enough for comfortable bathing throughout the day. In the east, Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda are perfectly swimmable but expect a choppy surface; Makrigialos and Ierapetra are calmer alternatives if you prefer flat water.

Tip for the Day

UV is very high island-wide today. Apply SPF 50 before going to the beach, reapply every two hours and after each swim, and keep the most exposed outdoor activities to before 11:00 or after 17:00.
