Rethymno Municipality Builds Retaining Walls to Improve Road Safety

Monday, 22 June 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
The Municipality of Rethymno has signed a construction contract worth 162,350 euros to build stone retaining walls at several locations across local communities in the Rethymno area. The project aims to eliminate safety hazards along sections of the road network where unstable terrain poses a risk to drivers and pedestrians. The retaining walls will stabilize slopes and roadsides, reducing the danger of rockfalls or erosion-related collapses. Work is expected to affect minor rural roads and village access routes within the municipality. Tourists driving through the Rethymno region, particularly on smaller roads connecting inland villages, may encounter temporary disruptions or reduced lanes during construction. Travelers are advised to check local road conditions before heading into rural areas and to follow any posted signage around active worksites.
