Back to newsWater temperatures along the Cretan coastline are warming as summer arrives, with beaches across the island becoming increasingly inviting for swimming. Popular spots such as Paleochora on the southwestern coast, Myrtos on the south coast, and the palm-fringed beach of Vai in the far east each offer slightly different conditions depending on their exposure and geography. The Mediterranean around Crete typically reaches its warmest in July and August, but June already offers comfortable swimming. South-facing beaches like Myrtos and Paleochora tend to warm faster and stay calmer than northern shores. Tourists planning beach days should check local conditions on arrival, as sea temperature and wave activity can vary between resorts. Water shoes are recommended at pebbly beaches such as Myrtos. All three locations are accessible by car, with Vai also served by seasonal bus connections from Sitia.
