Heraklion Airport Ranked Low for Delays and Service Quality

Wednesday, 10 June 2026/SourceTornos News/1 min read
Heraklion International Airport (HER), the main gateway for tourists arriving in Crete, has received a low ranking in AirHelp's 2026 European Airport Index, which evaluates airports on punctuality, service quality, and passenger experience. Rhodes Airport received a similarly poor score. The rankings signal ongoing challenges with flight delays, passenger handling, and overall service standards at both airports. For visitors flying into Heraklion this summer, this means a higher likelihood of delayed flights and longer processing times at peak periods. Travelers are advised to allow extra time for connections, keep airline apps active for real-time updates, and consider travel insurance that covers delays. The new Kastelli International Airport, currently under construction east of Heraklion, is expected to replace the current facility and significantly improve capacity and service when it opens, projected around 2028.
