Greece hit by heat wave: 37°C temperatures and mountain storm warning

Wednesday, 1 July 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Greece is forecast to experience high temperatures on Thursday, with peaks reaching 37°C across much of the country, including Crete. Coastal areas will feel intense heat throughout the day, making midday sun exposure particularly demanding. Mountain regions of Crete, including the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and the Psiloritis massif, are expected to see localised thunderstorms, which can develop quickly in the afternoon and early evening. Tourists planning hikes or excursions into the Cretan highlands should set out early in the morning to avoid both peak heat and afternoon storm risk. Carry water, wear sun protection, and monitor local forecasts before heading into elevated terrain. Beach visitors should seek shade during midday hours. Conditions along the coast are expected to remain dry, though the heat index may make outdoor activity uncomfortable between 12:00 and 17:00.
