Deadly Invasion: Greece Launches Toadfish Bounty Program

Greek authorities have launched a pilot program to combat the silver-cheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus), an invasive and highly toxic species spreading across Cretan and South Aegean waters. The Ministry of Rural Development and Food is offering fishermen 5.33 euros per kilogram to catch and remove the fish, aiming to reduce its population and assess the effectiveness of financial incentives as a management tool. Tourists should be aware that this fish is extremely dangerous if consumed, as its organs contain lethal levels of tetrodotoxin. It is illegal to sell or serve it in Greece. If you see an unfamiliar fish at a market or taverna, ask staff to confirm the species before eating. Stick to reputable establishments, and never accept or purchase fish from unofficial vendors on the beach or dockside.
