Scientists Urge Calm as Toxic Pufferfish Spotted in Crete Waters

Saturday, 20 June 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
Scientists at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) are urging calm over the presence of lagocephalus, a toxic pufferfish species, in Greek waters including those around Crete. HCMR Research Director Paraskevi Karachle stated that public alarm is disproportionate to the actual risk, noting that unprovoked attacks on swimmers are extremely rare. Lagocephalus fish contain tetrodotoxin, a potent poison found in their skin and organs, and must never be consumed. However, the fish does not actively pursue humans. The main risk arises from accidental handling or eating one caught by mistake. Tourists swimming or snorkeling in Cretan waters can enjoy the sea without concern. If you spot a pufferfish, simply keep your distance and do not touch or attempt to pick it up. Report unusual sightings to local port authorities.
