Back to newsCrete is under a high fire risk alert this Thursday, with three of its four regional units (Heraklion, Lasithi, and/or Rethymno or Chania) rated at "yellow" danger level on the national fire risk map. Dry summer conditions and strong winds are typical contributors to elevated fire risk at this time of year. Tourists visiting inland areas, gorges, forested hillsides, or rural sites should exercise caution: avoid lighting fires or barbecues outdoors, do not discard cigarettes, and follow any access restrictions to natural areas. If you see smoke or flames, call the Greek emergency number 112 immediately. Check local conditions before hiking or visiting nature reserves, and follow instructions from local authorities. Coastal and urban areas are generally unaffected, but all visitors should remain alert throughout the day.
