Kourtaliotiko Gorge Closed in Crete Following Earthquakes

Saturday, 20 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
The entrance to Kourtaliotiko Gorge in southern Crete has been closed to visitors for safety reasons following two successive earthquakes in the area. The gorge, located near Plakias in the Rethymno regional unit, is a popular natural attraction known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, river, and the historic chapel of Agios Nikolaos. Authorities closed access after the seismic activity to allow for safety inspections and to prevent risk from potential rockfalls or unstable terrain. Tourists planning to visit the gorge should check with local authorities or their accommodation before heading there, as the closure may remain in place until inspections are completed. Alternative natural sites in the Rethymno area remain accessible in the meantime.
