Back to newsHeraklion is experiencing the hottest day of June today, June 30, as a persistent heat wave continues across Crete and Greece. Temperatures are at their seasonal peak, making outdoor sightseeing particularly demanding during midday hours. Meteorologist Kolydas notes that a broader temperature drop is expected around July 4 to 5, though the cooling will be more pronounced in northern mainland cities such as Thessaloniki, Larissa, and Kavala than in Crete. Tourists visiting Heraklion and surrounding areas this week should plan outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon, carry water at all times, and seek shade or air-conditioned spaces between noon and 4 pm. Sunscreen and a hat are essential. Conditions are expected to ease slightly next week, offering more comfortable temperatures for beach visits and archaeological sites such as Knossos.
