Back to newsGreece is expanding its national highway network, with a major infrastructure push that includes 500 kilometers of new modern motorways stretching from Crete to Alexandroupoli in the northeast of the country. For visitors to Crete, this is part of the ongoing development of the BOAK, the island's east-west highway corridor currently under construction. Once complete, the BOAK will significantly reduce travel times between Heraklion and eastern Crete, making destinations like Agios Nikolaos, Sitia, and the Lasithi Plateau more accessible by rental car. Construction is still active in several sections, so drivers should expect lane reductions and signed detours on certain stretches, particularly east of Heraklion. Allow extra travel time when driving east, follow local signage, and check current road conditions before long journeys across the island.
