Tuesday, 26 May 2026/SourceHaniotika Nea/1 min read
Fishermen discovered a suspicious metallic object in the sea near Agios Antonios, in the Lasithi region of eastern Crete. The object was identified as a naval mine, likely of the sea-deployed type, and is believed to be of Ukrainian origin. Greek authorities were notified and responded to the scene. The area may be subject to temporary access restrictions while specialists assess and handle the device. Tourists visiting the Lasithi coastline near Agios Antonios should follow any local guidance from authorities, avoid the immediate coastal area if restrictions are in place, and contact local port or police authorities if they spot any similar unidentified objects in or near the water. There is no indication of wider risk to other areas of Crete.
