Back to newsArchbishop Makarios of Australia recently called on future generations to draw inspiration from the Battle of Crete, one of World War II's most significant engagements. The battle took place from May 20 to June 1, 1941, when Allied forces and Cretan civilians resisted a massive German airborne invasion. Despite eventual defeat, the fierce local resistance delayed the German advance and became a defining moment of Cretan identity. Today, the island marks the anniversary each year with official ceremonies, particularly in Chania, where the main commemorations are held at the Souda Bay War Cemetery. Visitors in late May can attend these moving events, which include wreath-laying ceremonies and military honors. The cemetery, located near Chania port, is open to the public year-round and remains one of the most visited historical sites in western Crete.
